I recently heard the saying, “A beach house isn’t a place, but a state of mind.” For some reason, that simple yet powerful statement really hit me.
It got me reflecting on all the changes Ocean City, Maryland has gone through since I was a kid. The entire landscape has changed from the quaint little beach town we once knew into the tourist destination you see today. Hotel chains have taken over where mom-and-pop places used to be. Small beachfront homes have been torn down to make way for condos. Some of our favorite authentic seafood spots have closed, leaving only a few familiar staples like Harrison’s Harbor Watch, while all-you-can-eat crab houses seem to be everywhere.
Time has certainly changed our little town, and it’s obvious that many locals don’t always approve. But the hard truth about life is that it is constantly changing. Change happens whether we like it or not. The real key is learning how to adapt without losing sight of what made our little town so special in the first place.
And through it all, one thing has remained constant in our seaside community: the beach.

As I sit here on this dreary Sunday, I find myself thinking about that beach and all the memories I made growing up here. The waves are still the one thing that calms my soul, recharges my mind, and brings me a peace that only the ocean can provide.
